editors surfaceechosoundEDITORS will release their eighth studio album ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’ on 30 October 2026 via Play It Again Sam. Following the recent release of the first single, ‘Call It In’, the band have now shared the latest track to be taken from the album: ‘The Rush’.

Following 2022’s ‘EBM’, their collaborative album with electronic producer Benjamin John Power, better known as BLANCK MASS, EDITORS have ventured into entirely new territory on ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’. When the band reconvened in the summer of 2025 to begin work on a follow-up, they were keen to return to a more natural approach reminiscent of their early years, after having written and recorded their previous three albums largely as studio-based projects.

Much like his solo album from last year, ‘There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light’, frontman Tom Smith adopted a similarly stripped-back, acoustically driven approach for the new EDITORS material. He arrived with a collection of songs for the band to play together, experiment with and explore, allowing the music to develop organically.

“It was a very productive summer,” recalls Smith. “The sun was out for the most part, we were in greenest Gloucestershire, not far from where I live, on this innocuous little industrial estate - it was pretty much the opposite of being in Berghain!”

Smith describes ‘The Rush’ as an imagined barroom scene in which two people talk about life over drinks, reflecting on its highs and lows. He continues: “That idea of finding comfort in people close to me, friends and loved ones and family, is a theme that comes up all the time. It’s a theme that is in everything to a degree.”

The track features Smith on mandolin, an instrument that gives ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’ a more organic core. “It’s not used in a folky kind of way, but it brings a warm element that can spike through anything in the mix,” explains guitarist Justin Lockey, who also recorded and produced the album. “As a texture, it’s definitely a big character on this record. A lot of the rhythms come from the mandolin and the acoustic as much as they do from the drums.”

The single arrives alongside an official video shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara, who is known for his work emphasising physical expression in film.
