Album Review
Initially started under the name BLURRED LIPSTICK in 2003 under which they’ve released the debut album ‘Heavenly Fields’, the name eventually changed to PLACE4TEARS in August 2005 and it’s quite safe to say it will stay like this until the band calls it quits at some unknown point down the road. But first it’s time for their second album, titled ‘The Silent Flame’.
Most songs on the album already have been recorded in 2006 and were complemented with new recordings end of 2008 as well as completely new mixed and mastered. The opening act for ‘The Silent Flame’ is ‘My Private End’ which can be seen more as instrumental introduction rather than a proper track. It’s first half is filled with a lot of static and processed guitar sounds. The second one unfolds quite abrupt with a full instrumental set of drumming and distantly sounding guitar. For the next track ‘Riding the Waves Home’ everything’s getting really slow now. The guitars just worm forward being accompanied by male and female vocals. You’re getting slowly carried away on the viscous sound waves which make it a perfect track to calm back down again after a stressful day. Also the next track ‘The Call of the Mermaid’ remains in slow-tempo land but our next stop ‘Illusion’ brings a nice rhythm to our ears fortified with a very present bass and acoustic guitar enhancement for good measure. The dreamy, ethereal ‘Tears of Avalon’ is a very special track as its being vocalized by the wonderfully warm but also melancholic vocals of Sean Bowley, singer of the band EDEN taking your soul far away with them.
‘The Silent Flame’ is a nicely flowing collection of work best suited for fans of both the Gothic and Wave genre. As for me I found a few of songs I like listening to but a big part of it just didn’t strike a chord with me.
