Album Review

As CELTIC FROST arose from HELLHAMMER’s ashes, so arises TRIPTYKON from CELTIC FROST’s ashes. After the end of CELTIC FROST, Tom Fischer resolved to establish what was to be a temporary substitute project designed to develop, record, and perform the music and lyrics he envisioned for the projected album. Soon, TRIPTYKON was born and after several demos, in March 2010, ‘Eparistera Daimones’ was released. After this successful release, their EP ‘Shatter’ will hit the markets in October 2010, including three previously unreleased songs as well as two live recordings from CELTIC FROST, performed at the Roadburn Festival.

‘Shatter’ begins with a dark intro and an intensely whispered phrase, soon, a female voice sets in to complete the oppressive and at the same time fascinating atmosphere. Again, the band has managed of combining melody with brutality, not created through speed but well-chosen harmonies (or disharmonies). The following track, ‘I am the Twilight’, could have as well been found on ‘Eparistera Daimones’, possessing a very heavy beginning and the typical CELTIC FROST / TRIPTYKON trademarks - depressing lyrics, Tom’s characteristic vocals and harsh doom riffs. It is astonishing how they manage to create such amazing tunes, which you can get absorbed in easily. ‘Crucifixus’ is a more experimental instrumental, which continues in the previous manner and works well as a connecting passage to the two last songs.

‘Circle Of The Tyrants’, a CELTIC FROST song, seems to be working very well live, the musicians play pretty flawless and it has been a nice idea to put these two live versions on this EP, for people who have not had the chance to see TRIPTYKON live. Since they also played this song at the Summer Breeze festival I attended, it gives a nice flashback to good moments. In ‘Dethroned Emperor’, Nocturno Culto of DARKTHRONE adds vocals, which also remarks a highlight. To put it into a nutshell, this EP is really worth buying, as it gives a nice foretaste of what is to be expected from future live shows as well as new songs.
