Album Review

It’s been a while since there where some news from the artist WUMPSCUT. :WUMPSCUT: is back with another masterpiece album for ritualistic dancing and consideration. His ultra-gothic industrial beats have earned him demigod status in clubs across Europe and a pretty decent cult following in North America. ‘Woman and Satan First’ seems similar in style to the last CD ‘Schrekk and Grauss’ but also includes some slower and more danceable songs. Few songs use some spoken German phrases and the other parts utilize an English and German mixture. If you ever searched some musical expression for a dark ritual night or a hidden sanctuary than buy this album.

The introducing track ‘Hallelujah’ sets a real bizarre tone with some prattling radio samples, combined with vocoded vocals and some parts with male and female voices. This track show some real nice club style but is danceable only on some parts. Right on the heels follows the track ‘Woman and Satan First’ much harder and darker beats thrilling our nerves to a new unknown high. Jumpy synths accompanying a dirty beat which is used as a base for the forceful vocals which repeated almost in a undefined loop excepting only some small text parts. ‘Death Panacea’ slows down a little bit featuring a sample from the file ‘The professional’ haunting vocal samples start this event, and after a short while heavy beats and a fat bass line kicks in. The combination from this synth line and vocal parts carried by this hard bass line creates a huge wall of sound.

The beginning of the next track slows down the speed further. The sound seems much harder and unbreakable, the vocals carry much anger and rage and lyrics like “I feel nothing towards you but rage….”  or “Kill That Little Fuck” show the real emotional abyss. Some lighter synths and almost moody/ atmospheric percussions start the new track ‘Burial On Demand’. This track seems to be one of the danceable parts from this album, but use some or almost all the darker elements from the rest. Right then ‘Grobian’ (German for Ruffin) starts with some light almost symphonic elements and a danceable beats, vocal samples complete a mostly instrumental track. ‘L’Enfer Noir’ (French for Black Hell) opens with the vocals announcing “The Lord has forgiven you, you must also forgive” also the other vocals appear equally powerful and are keeping sending a message through the air which pulls you in with deception and awe. This song is not a danceable part of this album but this doesn’t matter it includes a fine message and real dominance which could not denied.

‘Blutsturz, Baby’ picks up with a real nice percussion composition and some up-beating synth parts. A heavily distorted female voice supported with the German vocal samples propel the sinister synth-parts into your brain and stuck there for the rest of the time. ‘Cunnilingus Creutzfeuer’ seems something similar to ‘Blutsturz, Baby’ but uses a more typical industrial electro beat than the former track. The voice from Ratzinger was almost spat out with the typical beat and synth layers building a sound curtain which overlaps your ears and would never let you go. The last track ‘Kauf Deine Seele’ is a slow and atmospheric track which sews together the whole album. The synthesizer parts reminds a little bit on parts used by VANGELIS. ‘Kauf Deine Seele’ brings this album to a worthy conclusion and completed the journey we started with the first track.

Overall, this album is more than a worthy return to :WUMPSCUT:  and the entire CD is much more than a simple music album, it’s reflecting a journey to some new areas. It combines haunting and powerful parts with a much cleaner production which make some very enjoyable listening. Uncountable parts could be discovered with each new listening and for die hard fans this disc would become one of their favourites and for more casual fans it should also place near the top as well. Besides the music, there are wonderful different versions available of the album with fantastic artwork and photographs by Thomas Buchta. Each edition of the album comes with a different cover picture.
