Album Review

About one year and around two releases after the inception of Chicago-based electronic label Tympanik Audio the aforementioned celebrates its first very successful year with the second issue of the ‘Emerging Organisms’ compilation series.

Good old HECQ opens for us the second issue of the EO compilation series with the ethereal, symphonic waves of ‘The Glow’, a track that could as well have been on the #Night Falls’ album. 3:36 minutes of pure mood. As next DRYFT is sending out a ‘Transmission’ coming from speech snippets amidst tattered ambience layers and ground-shaking, apocalyptic noise breaks. A brilliant piece that makes curious of what’s to come from this artist next. FLLINT GLASS comes back with a new track as well and opens the ‘Al-Azif’ (Necronimicon) for us. The burbling of roaring waters comes to our ears and haunting atmospherics create a feeling of unease before gradually wet rhythm patterns fade out getting louder to reach their apex spewing cascade of intricately crafted beats. The ARCHITECT Daniel Myer brings in a new track called ‘Keks’, an Industrial/Ambient hybrid that in parts favours one or the other face but eventually all elements merge back together. I said it once before and I say it again: The sound design of ACCESS OF ARASAKA is amazing! And it is on his contribution ‘400 Bloc Overground’ as well which throws at us a fireworks of complicated, and glitchy beats subjacent to a sky woven of ephemeral melodies and atmospheres.

EDGEY begins the second disc with ‘Lodestar’ and a calm ambient blend while it’s later building into a Drum’n’Bass mayhem of sorts. Behind ROPE stands no one les than AUTOCLAV1.1’s Tony Young who ventured into collaboration with DJ Rhys [H) and the result is quite a danceable track mingling Tony’s awesome skills in constructing melodic, emotional textures with the interlocking rhythm structures supposedly created by DJ Rhys [H] but this isn’t the only appearance of Young on the compilation as he returns later with his main project supported by Jamie Blacker of ESA also giving his vocal s to the track if I’m not mistaken apart from a splendid performance on the guitar. STENDECK tells us ‘Lullabies from the Cliff by the Raging Sea’ and that must be a rough cliff as the edgy rhythms reveal pushing forth under atmospheric phenomena and ANHEDONIA’s ‘Different Places’ is a prime example of what can come out I combining percussion and glitchy, bit-crushed electronics properly and that is a brilliant track that should be visual aids

Can’t say that the compilation doesn’t have its flaws! Every compilation has that at least from a personal perspective as you can’t please everybody to the full but the amount of outstanding material on EO2 is almost terrifying, so don’t hesitate to secure yourself a copy if you’re into complex, high-quality electronic music.
