Album Review

To celebrate the seventh Amphi Festival, Out Of Line released traditional Amphi Compilation featuring remarkable tracks from 18 prominent acts of the festival. The compilation commences with uplifting and carrying away anthem ‘Nightglory’ by KIRLIAN CAMERA, and DE/VISION’s Synth Pop hit ‘Time To Be Alive’ picks up the baton. NITZER EBB raises the speed with fat bass lines and straight beats of ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’. ‘Death Cures All Pain (Aesthetic Perfection Remix)’ by SUICIDE COMMANDO adds harsh distorted vocals and punchy sequences. As the compilation represents the variety of genres and styles of the Amphi line-up, emotional ‘Halt Mich’ by STAUBKIND opens its metal section. Riffs get harder in elating ‘Falscher Heiland’ by SUBWAY TO SALLY. Then comes passionate ‘Durch Die Wand Der Träume’ in the recognizable style of SAMSAS TRAUM with rich orchestrations, emotive vocals and recitatives. Sound of bagpipes heralds TANZWUT’s trademark hymn ‘Meer’.

Dark electro comes back with furious tempo of ‘Tiempos De Furia’ by HOCICO, which caustic sequences are diluted with more minimalist but by no means less energizing EBM-sound of LEAETHER STRIP’s ‘Invade My Body’. Dance-floor breakers parade goes on with stamping beats and pushing rhythms of ‘Vollrauschfetischist’ by AGONOIZE. COVENANT’s atmospheric ‘Get On’ cools down the harsh electro fever and brings pulsating rhythm, sterile sequences and powerful vocals, while KLANGSTABIL reduces the speed with romantic melodious ‘Gridami’ sung in Italian. If I didn’t knew the name of the next band, I would be sure that I’m listening to WELLE:ERDBALL, because ‘Die Physiker’ by DIE FUNKHAUSGRUPPE sounds exactly like them, what can be explained by the fact that this band is a new project of the members of WELLE:ERDBALL, as well as members of DIE PERLEN, HERZINFARKT and SONNENBRANDT. Very nice and danceable track ironically revealing physicists’ true nature.

Gloomy and solemn ‘Der Wolfsmantel’ by ROME makes a great contrast to the previous cheerful song. It finds support in ceremonial and anthemic ‘Do Angels Never Cry And Heaven Never Fall?’ by ORDO ROSARIUS EQUILIBRIO. Gothic-rockers CLAN OF XYMOX restore the unique atmosphere of the eighties with moving ‘Tears Ago’. The compilation comes to an end with guitar-laden edgy ‘Als Wären Wir Für Immer’ by DIA KRUPPS, which lyrics go very well with a role of a closer. The compilation makes a good presentation of the Amphi Festival line-up, although I missed the songs from some great bands, yet featuring all of them is impossible. It is also a nice way to evoke memories about the festival. Furthermore, most songs belong to the new material of the bands, so this compilation can be a kind of representation of the situation on the dark scene, especially for people with broad musical taste.
