tempers newmeaningTEMPERS present ‘Nightwalking’, their new single from their upcoming album ‘New Meaning’, which will be released on April 1, 2022 via DAIS. Singer Jasmine Golestaneh says about the track: “I took a lot of long walks at a time when people had abruptly vacated NYC, and left the remnants of their homes on the sidewalks. The city’s landscape became very surreal - a ghost town turned inside out. I was thinking about how to stay open, and embrace life derailed. The sky over the city was a real source of mystery, in its own world of pink sunsets, and sparkling nights. The contrast of that oblivious beauty amidst the pandemic chaos felt very special, and inspired the song.”

In early summer 2022, TEMPERS will be on tour in Europe, so far a performance by the duo in Berlin has been confirmed: June 3rd, 2022 in Berlin at Kantine am Berghain. Further dates are planned.

With the self-produced ‘New Meaning’, TEMPERS present an album about navigating the unknown, coping mechanisms and being spoiled for choice. The ten songs reflect the creation of meaning as liberation in times of transition and loss, and speculate on the transformative potential of a changing world in a state of ongoing crisis. ‘New Meaning’ is more of a grey tone, from new wave shadow play to depressive disco to an elegy of hopeful resignation.

This is decidedly night music, elegantly introspective and quietly intense, born of “living in a society that’s still a dream of its own”. Tracks like ‘Unfamiliar’, ‘Nightwalking’ and ‘Sightseeing’ distil the TEMPERS submission to icy Pop perfection, drum machinery framed by trembling reverb, Golestaneh’s voice both ethereal and towering, simultaneously within and above. Cooper speaks of production ideas in terms of the “human architecture” that breathes life into the precision of the electronics, and of melodic intervals “precisely on the boundary between major and minor, austere and sweet”.

On other tracks, Golestaneh’s and Cooper’s output leans more towards the greyscale, from New Wave shadow play (‘Carried Away’) to depressive Disco (‘In And Out Of Hand’) to an elegy of hopeful resignation (‘Secrets And Lies’). The themes of the album are also reflected in the atmospheric cover photo ‘Lost Hotel’ (2016) by Beijing photo artist Chen Wei.

‘New Meaning’ is a document of branching paths and fleeting transcendence, a celebration of instability and impermanence, an embrace of the “constant state of becoming”. Ten hymns for a derailed age, ephemeral and sympathetic, somnambulistic through a “tormented city” toward a nameless future heading toward rebirth: “When I have / when I have no name / my joy is blinding”.

The album comes with an accompanying book with original graphics and lyrics. Jasmine has created a handcrafted collage for each song, translating the sonic landscapes and lyrical themes into concrete imagery. The book is published by Old Habits Press.
