Album Review

DARK NEW DAY is a super group consisting of members of SEVENDUST, EVANESCENCE, VIRGOS MERLOT, STEREOMUD & EYE EMPIRE. ‘Twelve Year Silence’ was their debut, after which they released a single and started writing material for a new album. Due to problems with management and label it was put on a backburner, but with all those issues resolved here they come with ‘New Tradition’. If this was released when this material was written it’d have been well ahead of its time, it’s still better than many by a long shot, but the margin would have been much bigger.

The album starts with its teeth bared and knuckles ready. The production seems to amp it up but doesn’t overdo it on the cosmetics of sound, which is gritty, raw and full on. The method in its madness is prevalently fresh and makes the listen to stand out. Fresh against the tired and far too many times recycled clichés junking up the sound yard of the genre and it also sounds a lot more genuine, sure of itself and substantial than the pretentious and unconvincing modern edge of it. There’s rage, passion, angst yet also guts to show vulnerability expressed within the riffs, breakdowns, fast paced drums as well the don’t-hold-anything-back vocals, and where accompanied by backing vocals it’s a double on the enjoyment.

You might be mislead to believe that songs like ‘Sorry’ and ‘Caught In The Light’ will slow down, but they are still as fierce as the other songs here, though these two songs are more introspective. Whenever you sense a weakness in the song the impression is blasted apart and improved upon immediately. Closing ‘Breakdown’ sums the album up with an epic feel. But listing these is only scratching the surface, most songs from here merit a mention but simply, it’s just better to experience it. This is an excellent album, driven from the start to the finish with a fantastic blast of energy sustained throughout interlaced by many interesting elements, and substantiated attitude, which is by no means two dimensional. I already doubt I’ll hear many other albums in this trend during the year that will better it. Quality!
