Album Review
‘The Sun And The Flood’ is the sophomore effort from Belgium Groove/ Thrash outfit EYE BEYOND SIGHT. Drawing on influences like SEPULTURA and SKINLAB, the music is full of somewhat basic, but rather catchy chugging riffs that are performed at a mid pace so it doesn’t feel like a blind-side like when listening to extremely technical Thrash or Mathcore. There are even some Hardcore elements thrown in with the dual vocal assault of a rougher bellow that feels like the vocals from SKINLAB and a heavier bark that is akin to groups like TERROR. A track like ‘Self Possession’ is an excellent example of EYE BEYOND SIGHT at their hardest and fastest, with the drums on overdrive but the guitars well layered so one holds the melody while the other just slams riffs out as fast as possible. Compared to other tracks like ‘Sick Society’, which focuses more on just the same riff over and over for decent rhythm, this will certainly stir up Metal fans in general and shows more skill than the generic works. ‘That Hurts’ feels a bit juvenile with a good pace and layered vocals for a bit of an echoing ‘hardcore’ elements during the chorus, but the repetition of the same riffs over and over make the band fall into a bit of a pit for monotony.
Thankfully, EYE BEYOND SIGHT is good about varying up their melodies so it isn’t just a chugfest all the way through. ‘Redemption’ and ‘Screams For Your Childhood’ are much more melodic and opt for more single string notes that slow the track down much more than some might like, but it offers a different side of the group so it doesn’t feel like just repetitive beating of the same notes and style track after track after track. However, some of these basic beatings do work to the band’s advantage. Aside from the usual rapid chuggers with poor lyrical ideas like ‘That Hurts’, ‘The Sun And The Flood’ has some of the best riffs that will certainly stir up mosh pits with no problem and the interplay between the vocals take a whole new tone; some could even compare it to Grindcore as one aims for the throaty roar and the other more of a higher pitched wail that doesn’t come off as annoying. Combined together, it makes the title track the best offering of what Groove Metal is for EYE BEYOND SIGHT. It is just a shame that too many of the other tracks went the more generic route and don’t stir up as much attention; if the group has thrown in more melodies and slower moments while keeping up their ‘badass’ attitude, this album might have been a lot more well rounded and lived up to the other Groove Metal giants that came out this year from such entities like LAMB OF GOD and GOD FORBID.
