Album Review

The name of THE BLACK SHEEP has attracted several bands so with no supply of promo material I had to fish the right band, but found them I did. They sing in English yet most of what I could dig out was in their native German and their home website is pretty minimal. Yet they have a commercial appeal to cross borders, so after a second album ‘Politics’ I think it’s time to up the ante to get teeth sunk into a wider audience worldwide with the lingua franca. The band consists of four girls, two of them sisters, I see them embraced not just for music but for the inspirational power for the teen girls – for them not to be mere fans and groupies but to take up the guitar, vocals, drums too. Yes, teens seem to be the most natural audience for it, anecdotally my sixteen year old daughter has piped up “the only band you’ve ever put on that I like!”, and enjoyable even for us, the oldies though only for a listen or two.

They’re fun, have fast paced and catchy songs, with enough diverse approaches and melodies to keep hold of an interest and good vocals. Within the Pop Rock genre they manage to not sound vacuous as majority of the bands playing it. Though, I must admit, the polemics of “politics” don’t exactly demand an intellectual effort their lyrics are actually quite thrown aside by their incredible sweep of energy pumping through the whole of the album; that outstanding quality would certainly push them towards what’s also called Arena Rock.  With ‘Politics’ coming out on Valentine’s Day they seem to have wanted to confront the sticky-sugary lovey-dovey nature of day’s celebrations with a more kickass vibe from the full-female band. Nice work, ladies!
