The BLACK SHEEP are an all-girl Rock band from Germany and with ‘Not Part of the Deal’ they’re now about to lift their debut album on renowned Roadrunner Records label.
So let’s waste no time as the girls don’t do it either with the energetic opener of the album ‘You can’t push me’ and even though Charly has a pretty lovely voice she soon brings on display that she can also do it the other way around wit h a raw flavour in her voice. ’Unwritten Apology’ delivers even more energy if you ask me with its in parts stabbing beats and short-cut riffs riding on top of it. ‘Brink us Back’ takes the foot off the gas pedal and slows down into mid-tempo regions while building from a fairly reluctant but wonderfully sung strophe to a rousing chorus after the second one of which we can hear a nice solo. On ‘Crash & Burn’ we’re going back to more powerful rock outbreaks and a drum beat that feels at times like a car chase. In-between the song sets some additional melodic accents with bouncing piano chords. ‘Nobody Knows’ was love at first listen for me The rocking guitars hold back most of the time to only appear in their full power at 2 occasions but then very firmly. With ‘Smash My Heart’ we’re once more climbing up the tempo ladder a little more. I can see people extensively jumping to that one. ‘Trust in me’ closes the album in a balladry way. Sad piano drops that merge with fragile acoustic guitar and imploring vocals on a foundation of subtle electronics that is later on supported by forceful but not obtrusive drumming.
‘Not Part of the Deal’ is girl power at its best! The four-piece is absolutely on par and in many cases even better than male counterparts. Congrats to that debut album. Hopefully there are some more to follow!
