ARTS OF EREBUS was born out of the French avant-garde formation YUUL in 2001. After over one year of hard work the first album ‘Negative White’ eventually was released in 2003. After lots of touring and personnel changes in the line-up works on the second album ‘Icon in Eyes’ started. It was released then in 2007 which also comprised ‘Dawn of the Dead’, the just recently released EP is centred around.
After the 100% electronic start of the ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (Single Mix) which was especially adapted to club use as the original version was too long, the track’s turning into a pretty standard Goth Rock number. What is not normal though is the vocals. Pretty out-of-line actually but giving a unique note to the sound. Apart from the aforementioned longer Album Version being featured on this collection of work as well, ‘Dawn of the Dead’ comes in two additional, differing versions. First one carries the title ‘Aftermath’ and other than its original counterpart is made up of electronics only, well except for the spherical guitars; the second one is called ‘Dead Bodies Dancing Mix’ and hence it’s clear what purpose it was designed for in the first place. Its special characteristic are the completely vocoded vocals of singer Damien. A stand-out track for sure is the orchestral version of ‘Zeit und Traum’ and it’s exactly as monumental and bombastic as the title suggests. The vocals on this one sound really weird and strange to my ears this time though. With ‘Pitch Black’ we get served a beautiful and electronic-tinged instrumental for good measure.
It is good Goth Rock I’d say. Not a re-invention but high-standard and Damien has a way of singing you won’t soon forget, that’s a promise. For fans of their previous works, there’s surely enough reason to buy this one as well and for al the others I guess it’s a fairly good introduction to ARTS OF EREBUS.
