EP Review

`Nothing But Memories´ is the debut release of the German band DOWNSTAIRS LEFT which was formed in winter 2007. The EP contains all in all four pieces and after listening to it, I wished there would have been more tracks as the three-piece has a good sense for emotive Gothic melodies radiating a melancholic mood as well as a certain darkness. The sad and gloomy compositions are connected to expressive male vocals resulting in an atmospheric recording for those who enjoy sensitive stuff coming up with guitars and drums. Therefore, you are offered a pretty timeless album which is everything but too modern or hectic.

`The Rose´ begins with whispered ghostly lines leading over to the vocals that powerfully invite the listener to enter a tranquil world full of dreams, feelings and loneliness. Considering the rather quiet arrangement, `Come and Go´ is a catchy piece beginning with a piano intro and Gregorian chants-like singings that are followed up by mysterious drums and decent acoustic guitar lines. While listening to it, pictures of peaceful graveyards and dignified processions came to my mind. Finally, the fourth track `Salvation´ appears very dark and somehow scaring due to monotonously whispered lyrics and traditional flute tones enriching the restrained instrumentation. Thus, `Nothing but Memories´ is the right album choice for people who love classical Gothic stuff.
