Everything new is well-forgotten old, probably BAD NEWS BROS, a rock band from France, was guided by this principle creating its first album ‘Barrelhouse Rock N’ Roll’. Self-described its music as a blend of hard rock, old school blues and some metal sounds, the band definitely tends the atmosphere of the time when such music was on the peak of popularity.
The album, total length of which is almost 20 minutes, contains 7 powerful compositions with a giddy touch of lively madness. There’s not a hint of pretentiousness, the music just tends to flit in one ear and out the other. ‘W**ds N’ P*lls’ with its energetic guitar riffs immediately reminded me of NICKELBACK of ‘The Long Road’ period but judging by the other track on the album the analogy can be drawn even further. ‘Misery’ attracted with its beautiful piano part while ‘Man of Peace’ and ‘Quan’s Regulars’ perform the functions of a time machine - Rock’n’Roll sounds in your head and no need to resist just feel the rhythm and move. ‘Maximator’ with its extremely catchy chorus fits this purpose very well.
In general, the CD is rather good and well-done and if it appeared a couple of decades earlier, it would bring the band success and a lot of fans. At that period music and lyrics were not as important as an inimitable atmosphere which is almost impossible to create nowadays. Listening to ‘Barrelhouse Rock N’ Roll’ for me was a kind of nostalgia yet the simple songs need some originality indeed. The mixture of those old styles sounds really interesting but it will be even better if BAD NEWS BROS adds to the blend more unique elements.
