EP Review

“A shot of blood, a shot of sweat ... beers!” That’s the slogan the Australian duo BUG GIRL introduces itself on its MySpace profile. According to this motto, the most recent release `Blood, Sweat & Beers´ features five old-school Rock pieces including strong guitar riffs and traditional Hard Rock singings giving an idea of being on tour all alone - no road crew, no support team - for some months. Therefore, BUG GIRL chose the right title for its meanwhile fourth release after the debut recording `Looming Shadows´ (2004), the `2005 Infestation World Tour EP´ (2005) and the second album `Rock’n’Roll Hell´ (2009).

All in all, this Rock’n’Roll soundscape reminds me of ROSE TATTOO with a pinch of GUNS`N´ROSES and JANIS JOPLIN. `Blood, Sweat & Beers´ is a passionate opener that punches right into the listener’s face. Dirty and raw-edged guitar sounds join simple but expressive lyrics and could be the perfect soundtrack for extended car rides. Lead singer Amber’s powerful voice is a nostalgic reminiscence of JANIS JOPLIN while her brother Clinton is contributing his punchy drum playing resulting in atmospheric roadhouse anthems. The third track `V8 Motor´ provides a masterful vocal performance with a lot of squeaks and shouting. The other tracks are pretty much alike and can be regarded as decent but not too innovative stuff. Nevertheless, alone the melodic and the same time forceful singing of Amber makes the EP worth listening.
