Album Review

The first time I’ve ever heard about the project GEOMATIC was when reading about it on the label’s site presenting their album ’64 Light Years Away’ which is actually their third one since their inception back in 1996. With their second-born ‘Blue Beam’ from 2008 they seem to have made kind of a secret breakthrough, catapulting them into the upper ranks of insider’s tips. Well, that will be to change now with their latest collection of tracks. The journey into “Futuristic sound architectures” begins with ‘Nanu Amu’, an alien term, but also the music doesn’t seem from this world, drifting in a sort of other dimension right from the start. First it’s only the heavy, evolving structure of the beats, and then comes the atmosphere of distant stars taking you away in an instant. The third ingredient being the tribal element then gives the whole thing a mystical flavour. The second one ‘Sacrifice’ is merely a sinister soundscape apparently washed up from the depth of the Styx. A while later the sophisticated percussion rhythm kicks in  and something like a ritual begins with a fanfare, setting something inside you in motion; a vaguely perceptible feeling.

And vague is some term to apply on the following ‘White Hole, Dark Soul’ just as much since I’m finding myself pretty much unable to give a clear description of the feeling this track, which is much less electronic sounding than it most likely is, invokes with me when listening to it. On the other hand I can put something quite clear about ‘Shesqi’. It simply makes me feel intrigued; I’m getting embraced in its atmospheric veils. They make me want to discover what’s underneath; how their complex structures of electronics go together; to understand their very fabric. The expanding spheres of ‘The Fourth Plane’ are like an escape; they take you away on their wings; away from everything that hurts, all the pain you had to suffer into another world…just for a few minutes that is. It became my favourite track on the album upon first listen. It had a very deep impact on me. A symphony of weightlessness ends ’64 Light Years Away’. It’s like a camera, zooming into a cloud of galactic fog, wherein a fleet of ships is hiding, waiting for their chance to do the ‘Final Dimensional Shift’ to bring distance between something following them for a while and which they know would be fatal if it reached them. Eventually, it succeeds; they’re getting away and are safe.

If I had to compare the style to something I know, something like FLINT GLASS or TZOLK’IN would be the closest to mention; just so you’re maybe getting an idea of how it sounds. But even if inspiration came from these two poles, the outcome is unique and distinguished. A collision of organic and synthetic worlds with a spacey and mystic attitude! It’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
