Album Review
There she is back again. The little Italian singer/songwriter Caterina Barbieri, otherwise known as MISSINCAT! With her debut ‘Back On My Feet’ she already delivered quality material and now offers her second instalment, simply titled ‘Wow’. The jazzy, happy atmosphere of a walk through the city welcomes us with the album opener ‘Wide Open Wings’; its light mood exhilarating the soul. ‘The House By The River’ with airy yet deep arrangements revokes the feeling of all the things a relationship can offer to you. The third song ‘I Wish I Could Allow’ in a fluid way combines an Americana-tinged style with the laid-back instrumentation of a slow jazz tune. On the little ‘Fly High’ there’s a string of new shades coming in with the addition of piano touches, trumpet fragments and something I can’t really recognize, but which gives the song a unique note. Imagine a cowgirl riding through the desert, a distant reverberating guitar sounding from afar and the mentioned girl is singing a song called ‘Try Me’
I really dig the mood it’s evoking. The combination of subtle string sections and acoustic guitar on ‘Little Birdie’ creates a subdued, melancholy mood, deviating a little from the usual material found on the album. ‘Dare To Dare’ comes as a stripped-down, intimate track, driven by the acoustic guitar and crystal piano flourishes in the distance, and last but not least there’s ‘Capita’ which is being performed in Caterina’s mother tongue and bears some of the most beautiful piano melodies, a characteristic making me fall in love instantly with the album’s closing track, featuring vocals by an Italian artist called DENTE. ‘Wow’ has become quite a tranquil album again that tries to convince with instrumental detail and little stories, packed in compact compositions, rather than exceeding opulence. That is really something nice for a change and deserves a good rating
