Album Review

NAISIAN is an English band from Sheffield that will dazzle one as musical alchemists - they fuse so many styles so that they push them beyond their own definitions... progressive rock and metal with sludge and doom metal elements, bit of hard rock, maybe just let’s go with avant-garde of a new sound, experimental. There’s always a question is that a mere experimentation or is it a definite new sound and/or style. In this case, it feels fresh, it feels innovative, and the fusion feels as a whole rather than a random throw-in of this or that sound, this or that style, this or that influence.

Since the band has released so far three singles and ‘Mammalian’ is their debut album, I will safely predict that NAISIAN’s future has many surprises and much to offer. I feel they have genuine talent and courage to push the envelope, which is refreshing and even renews one’s faith that there’s still music out there that seeks to create, and not to ape and follow the done to death formulas. For an unsigned band, the production and sound are of an acceptable quality, but hopefully they’ll be able to get their next album with a label that will allow them to achieve the best production and sound quality that they truly deserve.

Although I’d not describe them as psychedelic, their music has the quality of transporting the listener to wonder in the vast landscapes their music offers. They are like the wild moors in the storm, in the treacherous evenings, frightening, but exciting, mesmerising and enticing, hard and melodic. Rich and complex, beautiful and disturbing. Since albums like this are compositions in fragments of songs, and the whole makes for a listening experience I will not pick individual songs. I can only recommend this compelling, haunting experience to all listeners who crave good quality, challenging music.
