EP Review

Formed in 2011, Frankfurt’s THE MUNITORS start 2015 with an EP release, the rather splendidly titled ‘Sleepless Careless Dreamless’. It’s a curious thing. ‘Harm’ breezes in, all summery and full of bounce and is strangely infectious despite its verses veering dangerously close to annoying. ‘Walls Collide’ needs far more meat on the bones, its derivative sound reminiscent of a thousand jangly indie guitar band wannabes. Pleasant enough, but really, why bother? There’s more depth and atmosphere to the sparse ‘Follow’, and despite the return of the jangly guitars in the chorus, it’s a good, solid song. And ‘Blue And Green’ will get under your skin before its even got half way through. A good sing-along romp, the only misfire is actually giving this a January release. It’s far too jolly for Winter. ‘Hush Hush Live’ finishes things off, a rather loveless and aimless slab of bland guitar pop, containing neither a tune nor any charm. Its inclusion is a mystery.

There’s nothing terribly wrong here it has to be said, but THE MUNITORS seem confused as to just what kind of band they are. There’s certainly nothing on this EP to make the casual listener sit up and take note. In fact it seems happy in its destiny to be forever background music, and there’s enough of that out there already without wanting to carve a new niche in it.
