Album Review
MISS FD, a songwriter, producer and performer from USA, previously known as FRIGHTDOLL, is forging a new path for her vision by exploring darker electro-pop. She has shared a stage with the likes of KMFDM, SEABOUND, ASSEMBLAGE 23 and has also collaborated with EMPUSA and also ANGUISETTE. ‘Love Never Dies’ follows her debut album entitled ‘Monsters in the Industry’.
What immediately lets me down is the singing technique which is quite plain - the voice is too flat, it just doesn’t feel fitting. When MISS FD tries to sing high in ‘Away From Here’ she sounds pushed to the limit and straining, when the singing goes low, it’s the same painful listening. The song itself is one of the better ones due to the piano, even though it at times reminds of ‘Cry Me A River’ done in TORI AMOSesque melodramatic manner. ‘Negaverse’ lifts this up with rapping and EBM feel, which at least pushes some of the weaknesses away though not for all the duration - there comes dramatic singing, which again falls flat on the floor, not to mention the song would have stayed better in its harder phase, the softening just didn’t work.
Although better, it still doesn’t up the level and is unremarkable as is the rest. The lyrics are quite boring and clichéd. On top of this all, the production sounds amateurish; the sound quality is not so good - surprising when you think that sometimes even the self-released albums from unsigned artists sound better than that. I was glad to be finished listening to this, I don’t think anymore listens will change my impression at all. Now please, beam me up, Scotty!
