Album Review

MILES KANE after his career with THE RASCALS and alongside THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS has embarked on a solo career. He has introduced this album ‘Colour of the Trap’ with a single ‘Inhaler’ and some shows. He also seems to have “traded” with NOEL GALLAGHER for whose solo project he lent his guitar skills whilst Noel is now lending his vocal on the third track of the album entitled ‘My Fantasy’. The older Gallagher also seems to have inspired M. KANE’s styling (minus the mono-brow) of post-BEATLES look-a-likes. He also supported his brother Liam and one of the other oft-mentioned names in UK - ARCTIC MONKEYS. It certainly shares with that band that commercial post-punk revival sheen, that great cover with not much real animalistic sex-appeal beneath it. Yes, very enjoyable, good-looking (sounding) music, but you want to shake it up to see if it breathes because it’s like a androgynous mannequin with always the same politely fake smile.

For sure ‘My Fantasy’ does have something of the OASIS old glory upon it. The problem with that band (as many others so not putting OASIS singly on the spot there) was when the songs seem to be all one song, and you’re just relieved it was just one song here. Oh no, ‘Counting down the Days’ has that yawning cat-like singing too. I’m getting a feeling that KANE wants to be bringing the old crooners into the Garage lot, but it’s not working too well here. At times he also sounds as a really polished BOB DYLAN who forgot to have a mood. However as I said, the album doesn’t sound half bad, if you want something easy on the ear and something to just enjoy without being captivated. Songs as catchy and pleasant ‘Rearrange’, relaxed and flighty ‘Happenstance’ and ‘Kingcrawler’ - a song with some great drumming, rhythm, atmosphere, it’s one of the songs which discovers character is possible in a deserted personality, all stand out. The lyrics in many of the songs are quite good, though still nothing to write excited home about. Verdict: enjoyable for a listen, however, not a keeper except for some background pleasantry.
