Album Review

Finnish rockers PHOENIX EFFECT made their debut only last year with album ‘Cyanide Skies’, but they didn’t waste their time and not so long ago the sophomore self-titled creation was released. It traditionally offers ten diverse compositions and adds another chapter to the band’s musical development. The opening track sets the pace to the rest of the songs abruptly attacking a listener with rigid sounds which then turn into a rather tuneful yet still vigorous piece. And if the first album mostly seemed to be some search for a direction now the quartet presents more resolute and more distinctive material. On the other hand everything just begins so it’s too early to say that the band found its niche among other formations of the kind: despite the definitely great quality, variety and even peculiarity of the music some songs may sound too standard. It’s not bad at all because PHOENIX EFFECT also demonstrates their individuality but a little bit more of it and the release would be just wonderful.

Thus back to the tracks where strict, swift guitars slightly slow down in favour of melodiousness on ‘Euphoria’ which rather quickly penetrates into one’s mind and sticks in the memory even when the music fades. Though the songs have almost the same level of expressiveness and it’s really hard to mark out any of them so it depends on personal preferences of a listener and to my taste the best are ‘Black Art’, above-mentioned ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Into Flame’. In whole heavy riffs or leisure passages, impressive rhythmic pictures captivate more and more as the album proceeds and you are eager to find out what the musicians have prepared for you. To sum it all up I can say that ‘Phoenix Effect’ is obviously an interesting work that especially pleases fans of the formation and of course all those who like good music. And of course, even with the naked ear you may hear the potential the band has and will reveal in the future.
