scarletsoho2012Scarlet Soho follow the success of their recent EP (When the Lights Go Out) with brand new EP Solo KO released Nov 9th 2012.

A fortnight of headlining small European venues throughout May reinvigorated Scarlet Soho's need to create. This culminated in the Solo KO EP. The lead track (Solo KO) explores a more grandiose side to Scarlet Soho after the pop sheen of previous EP header When the Lights Go Out. It can be described as a sister song to live favourite Satellites (from the Warpaint album), with James' moving and emotional vocal taking centre stage. "Take it 'til your eyes roll, take it 'til your heart explodes...if it's what you were born for".

Bass synths grind, strings swell and electronics twinkle until the breath-taking crescendo of "we don't have time to fall in love". Solo KO is an expansive and adult track which elevates Scarlet Soho from being a straightforward synthpop act into something else. Mixed, as before, by Graham Laybourne at Boogie Park Studios in Hamburg (Falco, Boytronic, Depeche Mode).

Make the Final is an example of what can be conjured up at the bands demo studio in Southampton. Scarlet Soho were eager to create a track for the EP and live set which had a sense of urgency and precision but would also work alongside the sweeping majesty of Solo KO. The track is a stripped-back affair with trademark Scarlet Soho synth hooks, arpeggiated rhythms and regimented beats. The chorus and verse swaps between lead singer James' vocal and a sinister Daft Punk-esque vocoder. The lyrics were written during, and inspired by, the London 2012 Olympics.

The first remix to feature on this new EP is from Swedish synthpop team Candide. Their Skandi-pop take on Solo KO alongside a career in electronic music spanning over 25 years led them to win an online competition for inclusion on this EP. Previous work has included a well-received remix of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool's cult track 'Dance The Way I Feel'. This is followed by Hamburg hipsters Teenage Mutants with a contrasting 4-to-the-floor dance version of the lead track. Barely recognisable from the sweeping cinematic qualities of the original, this remix ticks all the boxes for the tech-heads out there. The EP closes with a shorter edit of the lead track specifically for radio use.
