MARTIN GORE unleashed the new song ‘Mandrill’, a first impression from his coming EP ‘The Third Chimpanzee’, which will be released on January 29, 2021 on Mute / [PIAS].
It’s now been five years since MARTIN GORE, songwriter and founding member of DEPECHE MODE, released the acclaimed instrumental album ‘MG’. On November 17th, 2020 he will release ‘Mandrill’, the first of five rousing tracks from his new, also purely instrumental EP ‘The Third Chimpanzee’, which will be released on January 29th, 2021 on Mute Records. It follows the 2017 release of DEPECHE MODE’s ‘Spirit’. Just last week the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
‘Mandrill’, written, produced and recorded by MARTIN GORE this year in the Electric Ladyboy studio in Santa Barbara, California, is, like the four other tracks on the EP, a grim piece of Electro that is shaped by MARTIN GORE’s enormously atmospheric songwriting. ‘Mandrill’ is visually accompanied by a cosmic journey through the jungle:
“The first track I recorded had a sound that wasn’t human,” explains Gore. “It sounded primate-like. I decided to name it ‘Howler’, after a monkey. Then, when it came time to name the EP, I remembered reading the book ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee’. It all made sense to call it that, as the EP was made by one of the third chimpanzees.”
‘The Third Chimpanzee EP’ can be pre-ordered on CD, as a limited, azure-blue 12-inch (which includes an art print) and digitally. The artwork is from Pockets Warhol. Pre-orders: https://mute.ffm.to/mg-ttc.
