Album Review

Since joining Tympanik Audio this is the third time ACCESS TO ARASAKA presents a full-length to his followers, which have grown significantly over the years. Titled ‘Geosynchron’, it’s following in the footsteps of previous EPs ‘Orbitus’ and ’Aleph’. He’s kind of taking them as a new foundation to build on. In the process he’s leaving conventional paths, at least conventional by his previous standards. He does not completely abandon previous elements though. They can be found a lot inside the journey that is ‘Geosynchron’.Upon starting with ‘Rhea’, it’s getting perfectly clear to the listener they’re about to leave firm ground and ascend into space, shifting into foreign dimensions where a cold, chilling atmosphere is prevalent. One is finding himself drifting weightlessly on a trajectory whose final destination is unknown. Ambience is playing a significant part in the new release. I would even go as far as to say it’s the key element to understand ‘Geosynchron’.

It all doesn’t work here though without the rhythm component, which exhibits an exceeding complexity. Traditional patterns are sometimes taken and twisted to become irregularly timed descendants of their former self; as exhibited on ‘Talitha’ where the first part belongs to the remnant of what once might have been a drum’n’bass rhythm stripped bare to become a collection of digital splinters, later to evolve into a full-grown madness of a complex meter. Other times, as on ‘Naos’, it’s a mash-up of aural chaos kept in line by a frigid texture of melancholia wrapped around it. ‘Cursa’ is like an endless cerebral journey through a space filled with thoughts becoming pictures. ‘BS-2X’ recalls the chaos of generative music creation and puts me in mind of how confused I was when listening to ‘Bine’ of AUTECHRE’s ‘Confield’ for the first time. Lysithea’ was the album’s harbinger, introduced with a fine video clip. The track features vocals of Jamie Blacker of ESA.

His voice being deeply embedded into the song’s fabric, it’s as though it’s gone into symbiosis. It feels like it’s always meant to be there. ‘Rana’ is our last stop before the end and a pretty rocky one at that. Its rough edges don’t make it easy for you to cross the borders to ‘Polaris’. Its real sight remains hidden to the listener, yet there’s the unclear feeling of having reached the end of everything; the point where it all falls apart eventually. Where do we go from here?
