Album Review

German formation GOLDEN APES was founded in 1998 by Peer Lebrecht, Christian Lebrecht and Eric Bahrs and in a couple of years the band released its debut work ‘Stigma 3.am’. Then the records came out one after another and definitely attracted the attention of lovers of darkwave or gothic rock. And now, the musicians are ready to present their sixth studio album called ‘Denying the Towers Our Words Are Falling from’.

The CD starts with expressive and tranquil ‘Windlands’ in which the music totally justifies the title of the composition and evokes fantasies about distant, mysterious lands isolated from the rest of the world. Profound vocals and quiet, measured rhythm allow to comprehend better the meaning of the lyrics that shows other sides of the song. Meanwhile the melody brings up the feeling of anguish and loneliness typical for someone who wants to break away from the society. It seems that the next track develops almost the same idea but in another light. The yearning for freedom becomes more distinct and the music intensifies that sense. But the album proceeds and the story unfolds: piano passages in ‘And Thus He Spoke’ just sharpen its expressiveness and the voice that was somewhat indifferent before is getting more heartfelt and it easily mesmerizes a listener evoking a keen response in his or her soul.

‘Digging Towers’ is one of the most striking songs on the album in which interesting lyrics and smooth melodic parts on one hand combine with power and energy of guitars and drums and this mixture carries you away in an impetuous stream of sounds. Dark and thoughtful ‘Rays of Light’ continues the same tendency when peaceful tune sounds somewhere in the background and gives an opportunity to enjoy sincere lyrics while instrumental passages exaggerate the whole atmosphere of light melancholy. The next composition stands out for its unusual arrangement and singing that balances on the edge between despair and indifference. ‘The Mark of Cain / And from This Heart It Will Rise’ impresses mostly with the figurativeness of its lyrics yet swinging rhythm and gradual growth of tension gently put a listener into somewhat trance in which there left nothing but the music.

‘Sober Light’ turned to be rather simple and monotonous comparing to the previous tracks but here the monotony doesn’t irritate at all but quite the contrary it makes you feel calm covering you with warm sonic waves. And indeed in the following song you may hear the whisper of waves supplemented with acoustic guitars that are spoiled only with dull beats. The other songs can be listened without a pause and they have their moments so in general the album really amazes and contains a lot of excellent, qualitative tracks. The material is diverse enough and everyone will find something that suits their tastes.
