Album Review

The folk band OMNIA was founded back in 1996 in the Netherlands. The musicians describe their music as “neoceltic pagan folk”. On their count there are eight studio albums and in the end of the last year they released the second live-album called 'Live on Earth' with 18 songs on it. 'Live on Earth' is 78 minutes of pagan folk orgy, which takes you away... sometimes somewhere in Ireland and sometimes to the Middle East. The musicians experiment not just with different languages and original folk music, taking inspiration in English, Irish or even Persian folk music, but also trying themselves in such genres as rap ('Dance Until We Die') or refusing vocals at all and charming the listener with pure instrumental pieces ('Saltatio Vita'). Unfortunately the recording quality isn't that good and concentrated rather on the vocals, so it is difficult to hear all the details and is needed to try really hard and pay attention. However this album is mostly for those who really enjoys folk music and is ready to spend another hour relishing different musical shades from the middle ages. So for the un-tortured listener, who isn't close to the folk scene this CD would be rather a challenge. The lovers in the contrary could appreciate this work and find something new and inspiring in it.
