Album Review
The people behind the release are Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen of Front 242 together with Erwin Jadot. The release is a debut for the project. Front 242 are known as industrial and EBM pioneers and therefore are associated with industrial-like sounds and electronic rthytms. But this project (apparently, even without wikipedia page) is something completely different. Back in the roots of electronic music it was used not for (rather simple) dancing purposes but also to experiment with new "musical media". Then we had seminal albums by Jean Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze and the like. This 2012 release feels like a connection to these times. The impression from music is further supported by performances accompanied by walls of video projections and vynil release. Just like old times. Not only the external similaritieas are present, but also the music itself features analogue syths, so if you're missing 1980-1990-like electronic sound, just go for it and get the release.
To be precise, I knew nothing of the old-school electronics when I picked that release for reviewing. I just liked the sound. It's all instrumental, and composed in beautiful minor tone that you can remember from some of Jean-Michel Jarre compositions. Complicated, sythnesided, aimed to create cosmic, ambient sound, full with electronic noises superimposed by electronic harmonies. You know, these sounds that are created by slowly turning dials of electronic wave generators and passing them through more filters. Can not call it a release that can be listened separately - most likely, it will work as great background music. But typing this review as I listen to S2cond S7ven feels pretty damn good.
In the modern days of agressive EBM and overall focus on sales it is rare that someone cares about golden days of analogue electronics. This is certainly not a commercial music that is aimed to fit maximal number of people, sacrificing musical complexity in favour of making something ready to be consumed by jumping teenagers that only need some rthytm and explicit lyrics. This is a distinguished audiophile-targeted release that shows true love and nostalgy for beautiful electronic music of the past century. One last tip: this is nor for your laptop speakers experience neither for lousy cheap speakers that cost dozen euro a pair. It will not shine on that so-called equipment. Get a reasonable headphones to get the most out of it.
