From one point of view MISS LI has nothing to do with Pop, stands there as one of the most notable exemptions to the specific idiom, on the other hand one might start thinking that Pop itself is not that homogeneous and has quite interesting variations. If by reading Pop the first thing that comes to your mind is Justin Bieber then you will be disappointed (or you’ll be relieved!). From any angle one sees this CD the use of contrabass and saxophone certainly adds class. And yet, the CD is Pop; at least in terms of actual popularity (which as I think is not that bad per se) and the level of lyrics is what one expects to be from a Pop band. The band though stands as a school for many contemporary artists who do not know how to turn their disadvantages into advantages. Miss Li’s voice is quite thin in its peak. Much for her credit, she didn’t chose the generic and utterly crap version of Pop but she and her band invested in a sound which has some correlation with the 40’s and offers a great deal of gravity to her voice. The feeling is of a cabaret perhaps, where you can smoke and have a great night time out. The whole CD gives exactly this impression, of a great night out, where the alcohol is plenty, where you discuss a bunch of crap but you don’t mind since you’re having a great time and a good deal of laugh among friends. Overall it is a guilt free pleasure for the summertime.
