Album Review

SOULFLY, the band led by the legendary Max Cavalera is back with its 8th album, an album that in many aspects is connected with another epic; SEPULTURA’s ‘Roots’. The slavery is its main topic in all forms, a sentence if translated in plain English would take the form of the poverty as a weapon of mass destruction. Add also the various forms of religions which demand obeisance from their followers and their tacit complicity in the maintaining the hierarchal ordering or even the cultural warfare against the deviant modes of thinking or living and you have the basic themes where the SOULFLY new LP moves with ease.

As for the sound, though it has the classic Thrash Metal feeling at the most part of it there exists something akin to Death Metal. The band is more than able to interchange the more melodic parts with the brutal ones and it is aided by the vocal abilities of Max Cavalera. His voice is wrath itself. Fast paced songs, jump-into-the-pit mood, catchy riffs, a cheek-in-tongue spirit that refuses to quit or to comply make ‘Enslaved’ an essential listening. All the more so since their American and European promo tour is about to begin and their live gigs are quite an experience.
