Album Review

THE SHINS’ foundation goes back to 1996. Initially there was no intention of reaching beyond local boundaries in terms of popularity. However, as chance usually has it, much more than just locals came to like their music and so THE SHINS eventually became a full band that has just released their fourth album ‘Port Of Morrow’. ‘The Rifle’s Spiral’ kicks the album off in a laid-back fashion. The track never branches out of its rather poppy borders while maintaining a captivating type of atmosphere throughout. The ‘Simple Song’ grows to become sort of a head-nodding adventure while the song simply goes on about one of the most complicated things ever: Love!! ‘It’s Only Life’ keeps up a singer/ songwriter mood, founding on an electronic base and a soulful vocal delivery. A hopeful tune, even though it might not sound like it at first.

‘Bait And Switch’ is getting introduced with a few electronic gimmicks before it’s bursting into organic life like a garden in spring. Have to admit though that those choirs sound a little weird in there. ‘No Way Down’ I think is the kind of material that is bound to become a classic in the band’s repertoire in the future. Being anthemic as hell it might become one even faster than I expect. Titled in German, the penultimate track ’40 Mark Strasse’ immerses you completely in its reflective textures woven with thoughts of bygone times, while the title track that is closing the album intrigues me with its jazzy flavours. THE SHINS don’t fail to impress with their newest full-length offering. They’re amazing in their way of creating a vast array of colours and moods within a mostly calm environment. For that they deserve a proper rating!
