Ok, what kind of band that combines state, punk and bankrupt in a play on words would you expect, when you get used to the name of STAATSPUNKROTT. As a child of the 80ies and quite familiar with punk bands within this decade, I was a little bit afraid of listening to the old stuff… and the frumpy lyrics full of anger I was outgrown for a very long time. To my surprise, ‘Phoenix Effekt’ was quite refreshing when listening for the first time. Punk combined with metalcore and lyrics mostly dealing with the subject of love and its rejection, was not the kind of music I expected. Aggressive drum parts, rough guitars, all of a sudden solo-riffs and vocals paired with well placed shouting… that’s the result of five years of hard work, playing their music on the road.
In fact, the list of bands they supported over the years is very long and illustrious: STAATSPUNKROTT shared the stage with bands like RISE AGAINST, BAD RELIGION, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, SICK OF IT ALL, DONOTS, A DAY TO REMEMBER, ITCHY POOPZKID, SUBWAY TO SALLY, STONE SOUR, ALKALINE TRIO, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, BROILERS, SONDASCHULE, MADBALL and COMEBACK KID. And with ITCHY POOPZKID, a name came along, that was describing in the best way what STAATSPUNKROTT was reminding me of. Probably both bands will share the same crowd of fans… although it seems to me, that most of their fans will be more juvenile, even older generations should give it a try, because ‘Phoenix Effekt’ is really worth to listen to!
