Behind PUDER is Catharina Boutari, who perceives herself as a pop-poet with rebel streak as she also takes on a political stand. She wants to connect “perfect pop song with poetry of words”, to challenge comfort zones and preserve the radical spirit of Rock’n’Roll. She started out in 1996 with UH BABY UH and played many of Germany’s clubs. She co-founded ‘Divas of the nasty’ for several ‘The Long Nights of Divas Nasty’ shows. From 2004 she’s pursuing her solo project with which she released a single and album; from 2010 her project is under the auspice of PUDER.
Apart from the fact that she sings in German (except for a part in the last song ‘Erde’ where she switches to English), there is a quintessential legacy of German pop-music there, however, she does infuse into it a wider appeal so that every legacy remains a part of what in these globalised times makes it slightly more interesting in a quirky way - which on a downside can be a turn off as well for some. Also that she mixes her Pop-songs with Rock, and sometimes a (very) small dose of Punk spirit works out quite well. Though the songs are catchy, they’re not exactly danceable, but they are enjoyable all the same. Some of the more remarkable songs here - ‘Sturm’, it has that aforementioned catchiness and quirkiness galore. The songs are varied enough too and her German listeners will be in a better position to enjoy what she sings about. The love of words alone does translate to other listeners still though. ‘Puder’ is an interesting release, worth at least checking out if not exactly one to keep in the collection for very long, it’s not one of those that digs themselves deep and commands many replays.
