Album Review
The duo that received some widespread attention with their back track to the IPod commercials back in 2009 now has returned with their second album, bringing you 'Sounds From Nowheresville'. Opening track 'Silence' more sounds like a breeze of the garden Eden, having ethereal sounds in stock for you backed by an electronic pulse. I couldn't help thinking of ' Hit Me Down Sunny' as one of those chart breaking hip hop bits. At least, it's got a good groove to it. 'Give It Back' has got all the right ingredients to get the crowd in a flash. A feverishly pumping beat that sooner or later will get you moving, and encouraging vocals. 'Guggenheim' is lovely, spoken-word storytelling with an infuriating outbreak right in the middle.
Amidst all those stylistic clashes it shouldn't have been surprising to find an all classic electronic pop song on the record, yet it did. In a good way, though. The vocals of Katie are splendid on this one. 'Day To Day' kind of follows in its wake while combining the electronic structures with a certain singer/songwriter feel that suits the song very well. The penultimate track 'Help' is a class of its own. It's starting as completely acoustic ballad-like piece, evolves with percussions being occasionally added to eventually culminate in a massive outburst before its reverting back to still waters. 'In Your Life' is downright emotional and stripped down to its bones. Everything except vocals and gently strum guitars has been removed while a violin motif was added.
With all due respect to the courage of delivering a mash-up of styles, I failed to see the cohesion, the famous golden thread that ties the songs together on a cellular level. They all seem like isolated parts of a greater story that doesn't quite unfold to me here. Doesn't make it less of a solid record. It just lowers the excitement a bit!
