Album Review

PURIFIED IN BLOOD unleash a new hailstorm of Metalcore that still shows no relenting with their new album ‘Flight Of A Dying Sun’. This time fans may be surprised to see that there is only one vocalist in the group this time- Hallgeir- but his voice carries well enough with plenty of bellowing fury to make up for the missing half that came from Glenn Reaper (though he does make an appearance on ‘Iron Hands’). After the atmospheric opening of ‘The Absolute’ which features throat singing talents of Albert Kuvezin, ‘Storm Of Blood’ fires things off with a heavy dose of bellowing vocals and churning guitars that feature plenty of melody. The intense pace of the music will certainly make fans of the earlier work by PURIFIED IN BLOOD happy but at the same time there are still plenty of doses of melody within the groove so it doesn’t feel like a complete boring chug-fest all the time. ‘Iron Hands’ is definitely one of the grooviest tracks with its slow, grinding pace but it doesn’t come across as just Sludge Metal, stripped down and bare.

‘Escape To Solace’ is like a half full track, half instrumental. Here the band shows off some of their best guitar work to date and one of their lengthier solos that just show how much more melodic they’ve gotten over the past two years. Like their previous effort, the album of course features an epic that clocks about eight minutes. Starting out furious and ending on a more atmospheric note, ‘Flight Of A Dying Sun’ features a blend of PURIFIED IN BLOOD’s more punishing pieces and psychedelic keyboard moments that may seem a bit out of place, but calms the album out in a tasteful way without seeming like it was randomly stuck there. Overall the band certainly still seems to be going strong, though they haven’t changed too much of their formula from the previous effort when comparing tracks. Still, one could argue that ‘Flight Of A Dying Sun’ is the middle man between both the harsh beginning and maturing end of what kind of Metalcore PURIFIED IN BLOOD try to embody.
