Album Review

‘We Curse, We Trust’ is the third full length album from Swiss Melodic Death Metal output SOULLINE. The group follows music in a vein similar to a cross between IN FLAMES and SOILWORK with a bit of Gothenburg influence, but the group does its best to forge its own path. New listeners may be deceived from the rather aggressive ‘The Curse In Our Minds’ which offers plenty of raw, unadulterated Melodic Death Metal that would make fans of AT THE GATES happy. However, the two following tracks change everything as melodic clean vocals are introduced, almost turning the band on a more Gothic Metal direction- especially with the track ‘Hollow’. From this point on the band settles more into a balance between the harsh verses, sometimes performed with a Hardcore influenced edge such as ‘The Sleepers Statement’, and the cleaner passages such as on ‘Unconscious March’. The blend is so significant that it almost turns the music into Melodic Death Rock- which can be good or bad, depending on genre preference.

While there are only a small selection of tracks here, and with the inclusion of ‘Dreaming Change’ which is a brief piano interlude- very pleasant but doesn’t add as much as one would think to the music- it doesn’t seem like there is much to base off SOULLINE’s full potential. True, they tend to keep their albums to eight tracks, but this time it just feels a bit shorter than usual. New fans may have to spin this album a few times to really get an idea of whether they are going to like the music, but those who have followed SOULLINE from the beginning probably already know what to expect and will be pleasantly surprised at how the band continues to evolve- while pushing for more of a Rock oriented sound- but not falling into the deep end of cliché Modern Metal. It’s not quite the masterpiece that fans may have been hoping for, but ‘We Curse, We Trust’ stands as another solid SOULLINE album.
