SEBASTIAN BLOCK was formerly known to me only as being the voice of German band MEIN MIO. In a sixth months recording period with his partner in crime SVEN VAN THOM he’s brought to life the thoughts in his head with his first solo album ‘Bin Ich Du’. The album begins in a quirky compound of broken and mistuned guitars, blossoming in an up-tempo and very melodic indie track whose biggest strength is Block’s Nordic timbre, always carrying a sense of melancholy within. The following ‘Ich Hoffe Ja’, kicks it up a few notches, rising from a sea of initial calm on a galloping beat sprinkled with piano and acoustic guitar for you to tap along. Very early on the album comes one masterpiece of a track that gets to you on first listen. It’s ‘In den Farben’ (Within the Colours), a pretty low-key song whose lyrics stir up emotions that remain buried most of the time that, when surfaced, can turn a happy into a sad day. “I’m dreaming of a life that will never be”.
On the album’s title track Sebastian’a kind of following in the footsteps of someone, someone feeling the same inner urge as he does, having been too places long before he was. Now it’s not very clear if it’s a real person or the imagination travelling on unknown paths into the future, but it fun trying to figure that out. With ‘Ahnungslos’ he’s pointing out the benefits of not knowing while on the closing track ‘Ohne Zu Fragen’ he’s trying to unravel things, happened in the recent past. On his first solo album Sebastian exhibits more of a singer/songwriter attitude than he did with MEIN MIO. IT is an essential thought-provoking sound, being fertile soil for his lyrics, that is, they complement each other perfectly. A dreamy but never unworldly album! Both thumbs up!!
