Not much is known about the epic doom five-piece called BELOW, the band bio provided by the label only calls the musicians “Wicked Minds” and there is no Wikipedia article that sheds light on the bands past. BELOW was formed in Sweden three years ago by Zeb (vocals), Hedman (bass), Paud (guitar), Berg (guitar) and Doc (grums). The band pays tribute to CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH and KING DIAMOND. In 2012 BELOW recorded a 4-Track EP and sent copies of that EP to various magazines. That EP also landed in the hands of Metal Blade Records resulting in a record deal and the 8-track LP I am listening to on my day off.
I have to say there are moments Zeb`s voice reminds me of Jon Oliva (SAVATAGE) and that’s very fine with me, I generally like his voice. The overall musical approach is very heavy, crammed with doomy riffs and very epic in its entirety. Instrumentally there has to be mentioned that Paud and Berg are quite accomplished guitarists and that Doc is doing a great job building the rhythmic base. I can detect the moments in which the band playing in the spirit of BLACK SABBATH or KING DIAMOND and I feel that it adds to their very own sound and is not just a homage .The music is not feeling forced at all therefore count me as a fan of BELOW. I cannot wait to learn more of the band (maybe interview them) and buy shitloads of merchandise…
