Album Review

BLACK SEPTEMBER unleashed their second effort just two years after their debut. ‘Into The Darkness…’ is a crisp, violent piece of Death Metal that will fall in line amongst fans who enjoy groups like INCANTATION, CEREBRAL BORE, and LANDMINE MARATHON. Drawing on fuzzy atmosphere that brings back the spirit of the 90s, first song ‘Into The Darkness’ draws listeners in with a slow, grinding tone until exploding with ‘Solitude’, which features some excellent blast beats and a much faster pace that eliminates the “doomy” side of the music. However, the overall pace of the music- along with the other tracks- never seems to go to full force blunt trauma; listeners can still easily settle back and enjoy the music at a leisurely level but won’t feel bored or overwhelmed by it. The vocals led by Jens aren’t quite the deep growls one would completely desire, but for a female fronted singer they completely shatter any stereotypical expectations about what a female singer’s role in a band usually is. She can put a lot of guys to shame with her throat ripping.

Tracks like ‘Invocation’ focus a bit more on the guitar solos, but when the solos are in effect the rest of the music behind it feels monotonous as the instruments try to draw attention to the solo alone. In the long run, it makes the track feel blander than it really is. Other tracks like ‘No Return’ bring back the slow, long drawn out chords that have the INCANTATION influence, so the doomy elements are back. Of course, with this stripped down style the solos are less impressive and the drumming just seems like the pedal is being worked all the time. Of course, despite the click of the drums the guitars keep up a melodic pace, though it is not as melodic as some might find on ‘Defiance’ which definitely stands out as one of the better tracks on the album. Still, despite a somewhat monotonous sound at times, the fury of BLACK SEPTEMBER has never seemed colder as they live up to their debut expectations and keep their ferocity alive as they continue ‘Into The Darkness…’
