Album Review

Due to popular demand, hybrid Blackened Death Thrash outlet DESTRÖYER 666 has re-released their sophomore effort ‘Phoenix Rising.’ During its original release in 2000, this combination of Death, Black, and Thrash Metal was a rare thing, but the band pulled it off. Once the tracks are dissected, one can see that the Thrash elements lay within the music with how catchy some of the rhythms can be such as on the track ‘I Am The Wargod’ while the vocals take on a mix of death growls and blackened shrieks. Thankfully, DESTRÖYER 666 take a more versatile approach to their music rather than just create blasting track after track by going with full on “Speed Metal”. Some tracks like ‘The Last Revelation’ will keep listeners on their toes with the ferocity, but after a while it may seem a bit boring as all the riffs sound the same with a focus on trying to play as fast as possible without much room for lenience in between.

On the other hand, ‘I Am The Wargod’ adds some ambience and quiet moments to the music. Listeners can definitely tell a lot more melody and time was put into this track as it still carries a Thrash base, but the performance is much more layered and keeps changing every minute. One part is Thrash and the next more of a combination of Melodic Death. Other tracks like ‘Ride The Solar Winds’ draw more on Black Metal - the sound is much more raw while remaining rhythmic and just churns right along sounding like something that came from mid era IMMORTAL. The vocals also seem to take more of a blackened snarl to them with help from the atmospheric distortion. Overall, despite the modern repetition of so many bands trying to replicate what DESTRÖYER 666 did during early 2000 and therefore somewhat watering down the original sound of blackened Death/ Thrash, many who have not heard this album before would do well to check it out if they want to see a potpourri of Metal genres together. For those who already have ‘Phoenix Rising’, sadly the re-release doesn’t include anything along the ways of new demos or bonus tracks to make it worth picking up again.
