Album Review

Their first demo back in 2002 caused quite a buzz. Those freaky Swedes with their cracked up front women were something unheard of and yet it brought some fresh wind into the game and with the debut ‘Maiden Voyage’ they stormed the scene and the cubs and by the time the second album ‘Outrageous’ was released, the band had established a loyal following worldwide. With a new partner Prussia Records in the back, the energetic four-piece now comes up with their next coup ‘She’s a Machine’.

One thing’s for sure: You’ll get no time to rest when listening to this record. ‘She’s a Machine’ is a powerful blast on the auditory channels, winding up with the title track as the thumping opener, a 80s minimal electro track that, with the addition of a distorted bass; packed together with strong melodies aiming right for your long-term memory to stay in there forever; and the catchy chorus, becomes a number you want to hear again and again. Well, the next one ‘Mf’ is a bit different though, coming up with a distorted drum line and an overall much harder-edged sound. That’s when the punk rock attitude is coming through and the vocals get literally spit-out. Compared to this, ‘Numb’ has quite a calm charm, easing the listener’s ears with soothing synth waves and sweet melodies, but it has the club appeal – and a kicking bass line. The next one is another calibre and best suited for the ones, being drawn to the rocking attitude; it’s a call for action “We are rebels, we’ve got the power to fight together”, so get your lazy asses moving to the beat and shout altogether when the chorus comes, but now it’s time for ‘Who’s that Boy’, the story of a girl, trying hard to get the attention of a guy, who’s obviously eye candy, speaking of ‘Candy’ that’s also the title of the next number, a sweet organic pop gem in the best sense as it has all it takes, a full doze of melody, a catchy hook and nice beats.

On ‘Weird Desire’ on the contrary, all those things have no use, put into a minimal sonic costume, where the bass takes on a leading role, the song even features some dirty talk “Let’s have sex on a table in the middle of a bar”, yeah, tell me more ;-) ehm, ok, next one, or should I say last one, yep folks we already reached the end with ‘Tomorrow’, starting out as minimal as the fellow before but escalating to a straight, rocking anthem. Really like the drum programming by the way, sounds fantastic. Ok, ok, maybe this wasn’t the end yet. There’s another CD called ‘A Different Perspective’ added to the normal album, containing different versions of the album tracks. If there was any organic element in one of the songs, it has been stripped out completely, to rework the songs in a purely electronic way. Just look at the new version of ‘She’s a Machine’ which has now become a neat track for the electronic dance floors of the republic. To hear the other side of ‘Weird Desire’ was a surprise. A bit of a bonfire feeling comes up when listening to a song dominated by an acoustic guitar and tiny melancholic melodies. With ‘Open your Eyes’ there’s also a genuine cover, included on the CD. I haven’t heard that song; the original is from the German rock band GUANO APES and was a huge hit back in 1997, for quite a while. The new version here is the exact opposite; it doesn’t rock, but you can dance to it, equipped with a ponderous beat and the matchless vocal style of Toril, this is a guaranteed hit.

They came, saw and won. Once you’ll start listening to ‘She’s a Machine’, the fresh, rocking and melodic sound unfolds its addictive effect. You can’t get away from it, so don’t even bother trying,
