Album Review

HATESPHERE are still crushing ears- ever since 1993 when they were originally known as NECROSIS in a more death metal fashion. Since 2005 and onward, they've evolved more and more towards more of a thrash/ groove sound, sounding like a combination of LEGION OF THE DAMNED meets EXODUS. The combination is solid, but at the same time hasn't really created that super recognizable niche for the band. So when 'Murderlust' came forth, fans and listeners might have been a bit unsure if to expect anything new or just the standard snarl and groove that HATESPHERE is known to usually perform in. It is safe to say that 'Murderlust' is a bit of the same ol' same ol', but it brings out the best parts.

From the opening title track to the more chug driven ‘Fear Me’, the album is full of some very excellent riffs and numbers that are definitely worthy of any angry head banger's collection. While the groove elements aren't as catchy as some that might be heard on other groove driven bands like TORTURE KILLER, HATESPHERE do a pretty good job of keeping up the pace and trying to avoid just playing the same four riffs over and over, no matter how addictive. Faster pieces like ‘Iconoclast’ are excellent examples of the band at their heaviest, but the biggest impression is probably the more melodic ‘In Process’ which has a bit of a different sound, which is a good thing for those who may start to get bored of the repetitive nature of some of the other tracks. Another surprise also includes the Muse cover of ‘Assassin’ which is still a groove driven piece that doesn't deviate from the original, it just sounds more death metal oriented and it does the song justice.

Overall, the tracks on 'Murderlust' are HATESPHERE material, but for new listeners they don't vary too much in sound so it may not make as much of a sticking impression as some might expect. For original HATESPHERE fans, the music will definitely appeal to them providing they haven't gotten tired of their groove n' thrash sound yet.
