Album Review
It was just in mid December 2008 when METALLICA pulled out a similar package with the ‘All Nightmare Long’ single. There we had 2 single CDs coming as digi-packs each with the single track but with varying bonus material + a DVD you could buy separately containing some more specials for the die-hard fans. The title track of the new package is ‘Broken, Beat & Scarred’ taking off with repeating drum/guitar section to come to the real deal just a couple seconds later where the drums unfold their real power and James Hetfield’s distinctive vocals come to the fore. Just like ‘All Nightmare Long’ this one features a few rhythm and tempo shifts speeding up the tune a little and making you bang with you heads even more than you’re probably already doing it.
CD 1 additionally contains a live version of ‘Broken, Beast & Scarred’ where you can feel a bit of the live feeling the song has. Third track on the disc is another live version of a ‘Death Magnetic’ tune ‘End of the Line’ beating you down to the ground with its armada of drum beats atop of which the guitars push and ride like on a raging bull at the rodeo. On the second CD we have for good measure METALLICA’s cover of the QUEEN song ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ which is a rather short yet rousing pleasure. For the people at home as it must have been one for the people witnessing it live as what comes across from the mood of the people there sounds definitely great and last but not least we have a real classic from the black album with ‘Of Wolf and Men’ and I doesn’t need to tell you what’s going on there when James announces the title after telling everybody to put their fucking cameras and phones away and to enjoy the metal show.
The DVD as icing on the cake comprises the promo videos to ‘Broken, Beat & Scarred’ and ‘The Day that never comes’ as well as an electronic press kit to ‘Death Magnetic’. If you’re either picking up one of the single discs or all of them together is your choice again. But no matter how you’ll decide it’ll be worth your money but for fans it’s no question what to buy anyway right?
