Album Review
Sophie Nadaud from France is the lady behind a project named MADAME B, now here with ‘Psalm 37.29’. It’s a stylistic mix that tries to generate complexity through minimalist compositions. The vocal affects early SIOUXSIE SIOUX, the atmosphere and attitude is of SIOUXSIE twinned with PJ HARVEY, but still it’s in a league or two behind either of these singers. The impressions come with weaknesses, Nadaud’s vocal doesn’t feel strong enough, her confidence feels wavering - there’s too much of a feel of trying rather than being - yet. The Goth brand of Punk sound of the mixture is quite raw but in a retro feel - of what feels to me the way THE CURE sounded in 1979 with ‘Three Imaginary Boys’ as well as the already mentioned reference, which makes one wonder about what’s new under the Sun, but this is elevated by the experimental or folk-ish and noise part to a degree. Whilst the affected eccentric nature does feel genuine, it’s got this teenage feel. You know, you feel like you’re managing to stick out from the crowd, but along that imaginary exile there are others and they are just like you, so you’re as overlooked as if you were swimming with the mainstream. Even if the artist has in a concept in mind, 20 songs (which fortunately are not excessively long) are still far too many as they are not enough of attention-grabbers, even if for a good measure there’s covers and other acts invited on as well. They let go of the interest and it can only wade in and out and that only weakly and simply just not enough to engage the listener.
