Album Review

LEAVES 'EYES new EP 'My Destiny'  takes us once again on a journey with the Vikings. Fans of the band’s sound will be very pleased by hearing the six tracks of this EP, because it is Leaves’ Eyes to the fullest.

The first song, 'My Destiny' starts with sounds from the sea: the splashing of waves to the coast, the shrieks of a seagull… It immediately lets the listener belief that they find themselves on a deserted island. Then Liv starts to sing softly, followed by catchy guitar riffs. This characterizes the whole song: very catchy, yet with surprising elements such as the grunts from Alex. A very good choice as a first single and a hit at concerts for sure. It is for sure the most catchy song on the whole MCD. With many dynamic changes, and still the typical bands sound.

The second song, 'The Battle of Maldon'  start quietly, but this is only an illusion to the rest of the song. Thanks to the choir and the magnificent orchestra, this song is bombastic like hell! It seems to be strange to hear an angelic voice like Livs sing about slaughter, but nonetheless the song don’t loses its credibility. The ending is soft again so it’s a fluent transition to the next track. This is a brilliant version of the old-English folksong 'Scarborough Fair'. Though this is the acoustic version, there are a lot of instruments (there’s even a bagpipe in it). Through the song it becomes more and more complex. Very good job.

The fourth track, 'Northbound', is a song also to be appear on the forthcoming album Njord and is a true Leaves’ Eyes song. Lovely verses combined with catchy refrains that get the feet off the ground for sure. Just like the title track, this one will be a smasher at gigs. Simply because of the great arrangements, heavy guitars and bombastic sound. A strong song, with many little things to discover. Still very melodic, an interesting combination. When you listen it more often the adrenaline comes for sure!

The following track 'Nine Wave Maidens' is a very beautiful, sensible song, a moment of rest after Northbound. It refers a bit to the Legend Land EP, because of the percussion sound and the very minimalistic way of the song: only Liv's voice together with the guitarist Thorsten. Dreamy, and let her voice guide you. There’s nothing more to say but that this is like a fragile jewel on this amazing EP.

The EP ends with a remix of 'My Destiny'. Leaves’ Eyes did a perfect job again and this promises a lot for the forthcoming album Njord. Stay tuned, because this MCD is only an introduction to the new sound of Liv and her men. It deserves respect that still after all those years she is changing, developing her voice, discovering new sides. Easily Leaves 'Eyes shows again that they are on top of the scene.
