Album Review
The band which was formed in 1981 rose to fame as one of the leaders of the American thrash metal movement with their 1986 release ‘Reign in Blood’. SLAYER also has been the subject of controversies throughout their career. The most prominent one being the discussion about possible Nazi sympathies due to the lyrics on ‘Angel of Death’, though the band has repeatedly stated they do not condone Nazism and supposedly will have to continue to do that. Anyway, this didn’t hinder the victory march of the band into the hearts and necks of countless metal heads worldwide, and their newest album ‘World Painted Blood’ only will bring them deeper into those.
When fading into the title track and opener, you can already note that a storm is looming over your head, and the first flashes soon come crashing with a drum gallop extraordinaire. Nevertheless, it has to be said this track is rather tame by SLAYER standards. Therefore, it comes up with superb riff wails, sounding nothing short of terrified souls. ‘Unit 731’ instantly corrects the problem of lacking speed, and Tom Araya screams as if a horde of devils is just trying to hunt him down. If your neck muscles don’t hurt after this track, you must’ve done something wrong. You can balance the books with ‘Snuff’ though that is, regarding speed and brutality, absolutely on par with its predecessor. The down-tuned licks and excellent drum figures introducing ‘Beauty through Order’ evoke ominous moods. Being a mid-tempo exclusive at first, the track gains extreme momentum all of a sudden.
One tempo variation after the other is thrown into the ring with exact precision making this one hell of a ride. The power of ‘Human Strange’ isn’t coming from insane speed variations whatsoever, but from radiating a sinister power making even a metal head’s hairs stand on end. The track, you’re getting kicked out of this album is ‘Not Of This God’ being a hunt through completely mad sound structures having cataclysmic effects on your physique, should you decide to fully devote yourself to them. You just have to admire with what consequence SLAYER push through with their violence the whole track through and this album is to be admired as well. ‘World Painted Blood’ is one fine piece of Trash Metal, putting all the fan’s minds at ease hoping for a return to form of their idols
