Album Review

SQY were formerly known as SEQUOYAH in their earlier days; since them they've moved on to bigger and better things. Still embodying the spirit of 80s heavy metal with the catchiness of 90s hard rock, SQY has kept both Belgium and Netherland audiences well entertained, as well as many more across the globe. Their latest offering, 'Demon Incite' is their most "rocking" album to date as it finds a nice balance of melody and heaviness combined, paying tribute to the likes to JUDAS PRIEST, MEATLOAF, and even KISS, per say with harmonized vocals, well paced riffs, and insightful lyrics.

The album kicks off with 'Hell Yeah', the first single of the album, and starts out with a great drum line before launching into the riffs and verses. The group choruses are very well constructed and the vocals have that soothing, laid back quality to them that made bands like KISS so enjoyable, minus the glam rock and long tongues. 'High Roller' adds a bit of blues influence with its softly paced guitar work and tends to lean towards the quiet side during the verses before turning things up in the chorus. '1,000' years even leans towards a bit of ALICE AND CHAINS sound, but with a much happier tone rather than the slowly, depressed grunge one. 'Broken Dreams' sounds a bit more pop rock friendly with its tendency to give off a more mainstream style, which is a huge departure from their earlier sound which was downright heavy metal. But, change is inevitable.

'Red Rooms Of Fear' does dip into heavy metal, but has a more fuzzy sound so it actually sounds more like the genre rather than a hybrid; think a modern DIO sound. 'Over The Edge' departs from the long, chord riffs and instead goes for a faster pace with a mix of bluesy style combined with melodic metal tones. The only thing that really is "metal" here though is the guitar solo. 'Liquid Devil' is an interesting track because unlike the others it feels more faded as far the production went, plus it includes some samplings in the beginning, which is a different start for the song as well. Finally, as if on a definitive note, SQY close with 'Through Hell...' which - like the first - merges rock and heavy metal at its best in a grandiose style, especially near the end.

For fans who have never heard these guys before, they will be well appreciative of the band has diversified and yet kept some remnants of their former sound since their debut. New fans will probably also enjoy this for its rock qualities, but on the other hand may never get to know to heavier side of the band unless they dig a bit deeper into their discography. SQY may have a new name, but they will always be SEQUOYAH to their fans who really know their style.
