Album Review

There was a time in 2005 when Germany’s SIX REASONS TO KILL was a relatively unknown band, sounding like a dime-a-dozen young metalcore bands with bits of death metal that all sounded the same. Since then, SIX REASONS has been evolving slowly but surely, whether it is a change in their sound to losing and gaining members of the band. Now, with their fourth full length album, the group has basically completely gone over to the Deathcore side leaving only slight hints of their former metalcore days. And, again, like they were in 2005, this offering tends to sound a bit too much like so many other brutal death metal or Deathcore bands out there to really show a difference or make them stand out, such BORN OF OSIRIS or JOB FOR A COWBOY. Only fans whom have followed them from the beginning would really see a change.

However, the shift from Metalcore to death metal / Deathcore is a welcome one since SIX REASONS does it well. The music is brutal… very brutal, especially when it comes to the deep grunting vocals. Tracks like ‘Welcome To Forever’ have an excellent blend of death metal and metalcore together with plenty of breakdowns for some head banging fun; the same can be said for ‘My Bitterness’ which features subtle melodies in the guitar chugging throughout the track. Then there are tracks like ‘False Absolution’ that lean more towards the Deathcore side - a switch of death grunts to high shrieks and an infinite speed limit - leaves one of the weaker tracks because it tends to sound way too generic. ‘My Poison’ adds a bit of variety to the album with some clean vocals - though not the best- also helps with making things a bit more melodic rather than just straight forward aggressive song after song. The same can be said for ‘Wandering Stars’ which changes electrified death tunes to soft, acoustic ones, chock full of melody and a stark contrast to everything else that was heard on the album so far.

New fans to this group will probably enjoy this simply for its brutal nature; the best thing that SIX REASONS did for themselves when they changed styles was to definitely use more grunts than the shrieks, which can get extremely annoying. They are still only scratching the surface with the depth of their musical style, but their continual evolution album after album is a testimony that one day they will break the ice. Older fans may miss their metalcore days, but there are still traces of the work held in their former albums within the chugs of the music. The vocals, however, are forever changed, but a welcome one at that.
