Album Review
Despite the fact that the band exists since the end of 70s the first album was recorded only in 2003, mostly because of the several line-up changes. Besides the formation had to fight for its name which was used by a little known punk project. THE TANGENT were one of the first to publish their releases on the Internet and use it for the communication with their fans. The theme of technological progress exerted a great influence on the compositions of the band in which the musicians try to investigate both positive and negative sides of total computerization and communicative mania.
The new album of THE TANGENT opens with a 20 minute long track that is common for progressive rock and this opus starts with the almost forgotten sounds of an old dial-up modem. According to the press release this song is divided into some subject that is easy to guess thanks to the changes of the melodic lines, the expressiveness of the vocals. The other much shorter tracks look a bit simpler yet the final piece again amazes with its length and depth. There’s also a division into 6 topics slightly different from the whole theme of the album. So a listener finds themselves into an old fairy tale where they can hear the roar of the surf, the sounds of flutes and various emotions arouse and are intensified every time a new unexpected instrument begins to play. Taking into consideration the genre of the release it would be needless to praise its instrumental component. However I’d like to accentuate a special beauty of the guitar solos, a variety of the rhythm sections… In general the album is very mature, well-considered and deserves an attentive listening and it will definitely please a sophisticated audience.
