The two brothers Johann and Oskar decided to found SLEAZY ROMANCE in 2005 to do something against their boredom. Countless performances followed, partly in front of two or three people, before the self-titled EP, produced by Kristofer Jönsen in autumn 2006, was made available to the public. The ‘No Spark EP’ followed in the summer of the following year. The extended version of this EP, released a couple of days ago is complemented by two new songs, showing the band’s current status.
A slight breath of darkness and sadness clings to the songs on this EP, which is at the same time touching and fascinating. At no point the emotions in the vocals seem staged or spurious to me, just a pure and honest expression of feelings. The mood I mentioned earlier might also come from the fact that JOY DIVISION is mentioned as an influence for the music yet I think that this mood has its origin to a big part in Johann’s way of singing. Sometimes you really feel like being pushed back into the 70s, listening to some rock tunes there because the sound is very much authentic if you compare it to some rock songs from the same period. ‘Middleclass Love’ and ‘Silky Boy’, my personal highlights and also some very good examples and the song ‘Be with my Bed’ which I also appreciate very much, is included in two versions, ‘Version 1’ has a bit more rhythm and a more detailed sound, while ‘Version 2’ seems to be a demo version and stays in the lower tempo regions.
SLEAZY ROOMANCE is a band with the potential to become something bigger. Die recording quality of the songs partly varies what is not that serious in my opinion as the tracks itself are very good. I’m sure we’ll soon see a full-length album of this band.
